Saxophonist Don Aliquo, Jr.’s formative years were spent in his hometown of Pittsburgh, PA where he studied with his father, Don Aliquo Sr., an active and well-respected jazz artist and educator in the Pittsburgh community.

Fathers and Sons project was truly a labour of love and a testament of a lifetime of music making, mutual respect and admiration between a father and a son.  But what was originally envisioned as a “blowing date” became a celebration of jazz born and bred in Pittsburgh. The Johnson, DeFade, Benack, Ashby and DePaolis families heard on Fathers and Sons represent a Pittsburgh jazz legacy deeply rooted. Each Father’s and Son’s enthusiasm and inspired playing adds joy comradery to the project.

Don Jr. has been described as a player, “with an articulate flow of always surprising ideas, sophisticated with a dexterous technique and an incredibly smooth tenor sound that seduces rather than shouts.” Although his early influences are saxophonists John Coltrane, Stanley Turrentine and Dexter Gordon, his recent playing displays the influences of Lester Young, Stan Getz and Joe Henderson as well.  Don Jr. is currently Professor of Saxophone and Jazz Studies at Middle Tennessee State University where he also served as the Director of Jazz Studies from 2002 to 2012. Don Jr. is an in-demand clinician, presenting concerts and clinics throughout the United States and is honoured to represent Vandoren reeds and mouthpieces and Selmer saxophones.

Don Sr. was born in Johnstown, PA and came to Pittsburgh in 1956.  At age 19 he was accepted in the Walter Reed Band in Washington, DC, playing for many dignitaries including President Truman.  Don Sr. has shared the stage with prominent entertainers such as Tony Bennett, Lena Horne, Mel Tormé and Johnny Mathis and performed with Hal Case, Johnny Long, Woody Herman and as a guest soloist with the River City Brass Band and recorded for Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood on PBS.  Don Sr. taught school in the Highlands School District for 36 years while working as an active musician in Pittsburgh, was a member of the Steeler Football Pep Band during the 1970s and1990s and in addition to Fathers and Sons has recorded two CDs as a leader and one with the John Wilson Band.
